THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE BUYING A DOG

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW

This page was created to help people learn a little about AKC, breeding and buying a pup .Below are answers to questions we know some people have when buying pups . We hope that buyers take a few minutes to read the information we have provided .

Never buy A pup with a promise of AKC papers down the line .
Many people purchase a puppy, from the owner of the litter[ Breeder or Seller ] in which the AKC papers on the pup for "whatever" reason the Seller / Breeder gives ,are not present at the time of sale .Seller may say 'AKC has not sent the papers yet
but I will get them to you as soon as they do " .Buyer beware-Do not fall for it !
AKC states" Never purchase a pup with a promise of getting the AKC papers later from the Seller" .AKC states -it can not help you retreive the pups papers after the sale .Those who doubt click here AKC REGISTRATION .There are many reasons why AKC would refuse to register a litter .
Never purchase any puppy who's AKC paperwork is NOT present at time of sale /money exchanges hands . A buyer should receive AKC paperwork on the pup , in their hand when they pay for the pup .Any Seller/ Breeder of pups has had plenty of time to have taken care of registering the litter with AKC before pups were ready for their homes. It takes 6-8 weeks[generally when most people sale their pups, before pup can be old enough to be sold .So the Seller of the litter had 6-8 weeks to get pups papers ready.
There are only 2 execption's to this rule- -#1 is if the parents of the pups were just Imported from Germany .#2 unless there is a written sales contract stating that the Seller would refund to the Buyer ,the purchase price of any pup if its AKC papers were not handed over within a stated time .
In both exceptions we advise make sure whoever you are conducting business with is trustworthy before signing any agreement for future" promise" of AKC papers . ANY CONTRACT IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE MAKERS REPUTATION AND INTERGITY .

DNA why is it needed?
DNA proves a pups parentage, it is unique to each dog .Breeders using DNA as a tool in their breedings , on both parents ,wish to show their honesty & give their buyers peace of mind .Click here to learn more about AKC DNA .
The public should be aware that many people in this world dealing in dogs
[selling , breeding ] are involved in wrong doing by use of fradulant breeding , false records , / selling pups of impure breeding as pure bred , etc ..Some of these wrong doing persons [ we will call them Bad Egg's ] switch the dogs used in a breeding ,stating a champion is sire to litter when its really another dog that is sire .Bad Egg's may sale dogs as purebred when they are not ,switch AKC papers on dogs ,sale litter of pups sired by multiple sires ,keep dogs in nasty conditions or mistreat dogs, etc .If caught , these Bad Eggs are fined by AKC & loose registration with AKC for up to 10 years & all of their dogs - including pups from those dogs loose their AKC papers.
How would this effect a puppy buyer ? anyone unfortunate enough to buy from a Bad Egg Breeder/ Seller runs the risk of receiving a pup/dog , whose AKC papers are worthless & whose breeding / bloodlines are very questionable .When AKC catches a Bad Egg , AKC revolks all of the AKC paperwork on the dogs owned by the "Bad Egg" .This means that all AKC paperwork on adult dogs owned by Bad Egg & every pup from those dogs breedings- loose AKC registration papers.
The Bad Egg effects everyone who had contact with or done business with them .All buyers of his / her pups now have no AKC papers on their dogs .All dog fanciers who know them or done business with them now wonder " how long it was going on ? What about their past breeding practices ?Are any of the dogs they owned pure bred ?
AKC might further investigate the Bad Egg's past breedings which can result in further suspensions of AKC registration papers on dogs, pups& litters from years prior to the present offense .The risk is that all the people who did business with that person stands to loose their AKC papers on the pups/dogs rending many dogs non registerable & putting doubt into everyone's mind who dealt with the Bad Egg.
The Bad Egg breeder/Seller not only does a huge injustice to the breed which they sale but also to anyone unfortunate enough to have dealt with them ! Imagine the horror /greif of the Buyer who has paid a little extra for that promised purebred pup with those AKC papers -only to find that now not only is the AKC paper worthless but they also question their pups breeding .Is Rover purebred ?Who is Rovers parents ? Is the pedigree true ? The dog can not be shown or bred from .
Those who do not think this is a very real & serious problem read on .. The following was copied from AKC website , under the heading titled INSIDE AKC , under title board minutes:
In the month of July of 2003, AKC website reported that 44 litter applications were revolked due to wrong doing, resulting in a total of 181 dogs being unable to be registered .
That is only for that 1 month ,WHICH IS LOW CONSIDERING THE OTHER MONTHS .
The AKC reports Bad Egg's on their website, just click here AKC BOARD MINUTES , once there simply click on a month , scroll half way through the AKC minutes page looking for AKC compliance.Listed is all the DETAILS ,SOME even list the BAD EGGS name who were caught "cheating, mistreating dogs , forgery, etc " along with the breed they peddle ,and a month total for all dogs whose AKC papers were revolked .This is a serious problem that should be addressed .
Further effects in the year 2002 alone 1,080 dogs AKC papers were revolked due to "frad" that figure is low ,if you consider that in 2002 their were 4 months in which AKC had no investigations at all of Breeders/ Sellers of pups ,so the total number of revolked AKC papers is lower . As well as consider that AKC is trying their best but they only have a handful of investigators to cover the entire USA & look into whose fradulent .

We want to make it Very clear AKC is not at fault here - IT IS ENTIRELY BREEDERS /SELLERS AT FAULT ! Make sure you are buying from a descent breeder with morals do your homework BUYERS!
We DO HOWEVER personally feel it would help solve some of this "fradulent breeding " if perhaps AKC imposed a very heavy fine along with banning those caught "wrong doing " FOREVER from breeding any registered dog, as well as make it manatory that all dogs used in any breeding be DNA certified before any resulting litters could be registered .This would really help put a end to "wrong doing " it would improve the intergity of the breed and help buyers get peace of mind .To go even further it would be great if AKC would then offer any person registering a pup with AKC - a DNA print out on a pup -that way all would be clear on the pups DNA as well as its parentage .

AKC or UKC or CKC what is the difference ?
AKC is the ONLY ACCEPTED dog registry in United States .AKC is the only accepted registry to other foreign countries .
Do not be fooled by people selling dogs with CKC or UKC papers on their pups & dogs .These registries are not accepted by other countries nor are they the same or anywhere near AKC .
CKC & UKC will register any dog whether pure bred or picked up off the street , they will even register a breed someone decideds to invent by mixing several mutt dogs together and calling it a springercockerpoo[ springer spaniel +cocker spaniel +poodle]
WHO IS AT BLAME FOR THE MESS ?
The full responsiabilty of the purebred dog & keeping the breed true lies within Breeders / Sellers , the AKC & to some EXTENT Buyer's too .Everyone buying , Selling Breeding or registering dogs contributes in some way , whether the contributions are good or bad depends on the people involved .
Breeders have tools to use in helping keep the breed in which they produce true . These tools are as follows
1. the health / temperment of the stock they choose to breed together .
2. the pedigree of the dogs used in a breeding .
3. offering buyer's AKC LIMITED REGISTRATION
4.must have honesty and interigty in dealing with customers without them Breeders / Sellers can destroy the breed , the customer and their business .
5 .use DNA
* AKC states that it can not be held responsible for anyones breeding practices. AKC states it does not monitor a breeders choices of animals used in a breeding. AKC does and will register inbred puppies for the almighty $$$.AKC would help if they passed stricter rules governing breeder/ sellers of dog and their breeding practices .

Buyers who purchase dogs without education themselves about Breeders / Sellers ,the different quality , as well as price of dog offered for sale , the breed they wish to purchase and dog training must also accept blame if they end up with a pup that they are not happy with .You pay for what you get in most cases but a Buyer has a better chance at success if they take the extra time to learn before spending their money .

Red flag warnings do not buy pups /dogs from places having conditions below ;
1. Many different litters or several litters from many different breeds for sale
2. Skinny Adults or pups , visible signs of skin problems, loose stools
2. Unclean animals & surroundings - dirty water , unclean pins , odor
3. Animals which pace their cages or spin like animals at the Zoo
4. No vet health certificate to prove pups were examined by vet prior to sale
5. No WRITTEN guarantee on pups for health
6. untrained adults , overly aggressive animals , fearful pups
7. dogs kept in cages , many different locations housing dogs .
