Special Collections Librarian/Archivist

The J. Edgar and Louise S. Monroe Library seeks a flexible and energetic archivist to be an active member of the library’s Special Collections & Archives Team. The archivist will be involved in a wide range of activities, including collection development and acquisitions; arrangement, description, and cataloging; and reference and outreach. The archivist will provide leadership for digitization projects and for developing web-based information about materials in Special Collections & Archives. The archivist will also serve as a liaison to one or more academic programs and will be an active member of several library teams.

This is a 12-month, tenure-track position with 20 days of vacation and competitive benefits package, including TIAA-CREF. Appointment will be at the Assistant Professor level ($37,000 minimum). Position begins August 1, 2005.

Special Collections & Archives derives much of its identity from its Jesuit holdings, which include the Archives of the New Orleans Province of the Society of Jesus and the personal papers of notable Jesuits. Its other strengths include holdings related to social justice, environmental activism, literature, and the arts.

Loyola University’s Monroe Library is located on a beautiful campus in uptown New Orleans, facing Audubon Park and the historic streetcar line. Loyola University is a Catholic institution that emphasizes the Jesuit tradition of contributing to the liberal education of the whole person.

ALA-accredited MLS (applications from May or August 2005 graduates are welcomed); graduate level course work in archival administration or at least one year archival experience; knowledge of current archival theory and practice; knowledge of and facility with applications of technology to archival management and access; ability to lead public outreach activities, including preparation of physical and online exhibitions; excellent interpersonal skills and strong commitment to team-based work; ability to work effectively and cooperatively with faculty, staff, and students.
